The Scan of True Love

New research using technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging or fMRI, has the ability to record the brain activity of true love.

At the University College of London researchers are able to use fMRI to scan what are called “dopaminergic activity,” or areas of brain activity that are being actively affected by dopamine, the well-known “feel good” hormone for the brain. Additionally the fMRI is able to simultaneously scan for serotonin, a second, though thought to be not as powerful positive emotional hormone.

At the Neuroimaging Center at the College of London researchers were able to scan the brains of 24 volunteers as they were shown images of the partners from happy memories. Then participants were shown pictures of personal friends of the same sex as their partner, but whom they were not attracted to in a romantic manner.

The result, says Dr. SemirZeki, lead author and researcher on the study, was that we were able to take the images of the persons brain when they were viewing their partner, and subtract from that the images of their brain when viewing other people they knew and hand positive, but not romantic, relationships with, in order to attain an image unique to those they loved in a romantic manner; a scan of true love.

The results showed that in both men and women the areas of the brain that deal with logic and judgment shut down. This result, says Dr. Zeki, was found across all of our participants whom ranged in age from 19 to over 45 years of age, where the relationship ranged from just four months to over 20 years.

What is interesting, says Zeki, is that while his research study used images to cause the changes in human brain activity, the work of some of the worlds most famous writers of love and passion, such as Shakespeare and Dante can induce similar patterns in people, providing a very strong relationship to love, positive brain hormones, and the shutting down of the areas of the brain thought to deal with logic and reason.
