What is The Dukan Diet?

The Dukan diet plan is a much acclaimed and highly effective diet plan which promotes significant weight loss through reducing calorie consumption. The name comes from none other than Pierre Dukan, a French doctor who created the diet plan with weight loss in mind. The Dukan diet is also known as a carb rotation diet, it is very rich in proteins and works to rotate the kinds of carbs that you consume. The diet is commonly divided into four different phases, the first two of which are designed to dramatically cut the body’s caloric intake, causing you to lose weight quickly. The next two phases are more focused on stabilizing your diet and promote a healthy body mass.

The very first phase of the Dukan diet is the attack phase, as in attacking those unwanted stores of fat. You need to decide how much weight you want to attempt to lose in the first phase, keep your goal to a maximum of ten pounds. Whatever your goal, so long as it is within ten pounds, can be achieved within five days of beginning the attack phase. In terms of diet, any foods which are high in fat or carbs are strictly prohibited. Rather you should drink lots of calorie-free juice and at least ten glasses of water a day. For foods you should stick to things like chicken, egg whites, low fat yogurt, turkey, grapes, oranges, and other citrus fruits.

The second phase is known as the cruise phase, and consists of rotating vegetables with protein foods. The vegetables should always be raw or boiled, and may include cabbage, broccoli, spinach, French beans, and Brussels sprouts. You should lose about three pounds a week in this phase; though remember once again to drink lots of water.

The third phase is known as the consolidated phase, or maintenance phase, and includes an extra serving of carbs once a week. Your diet for this week can include certain rice, pasta, cottage cheese, whole grains, and fruits which have high water content.

The fourth and final phase is very important because you seriously do not want to recede back into old habits and lose all the hard-earned gain you’ve made thus far. This means you must still stay away from junk food and soda pop. You should also set aside one day a week, usually a Thursday, in which you eat nothing but protein. This diet should bring about a relatively quick but gradual loss in weight which is most importantly a healthy one and a sustainable one.

These are the basics of the Dukan Diet. Many people have had success with this diet and have found it easy to stick to and lose weight. However, as with all things, it is important to find a diet and exercise plan that works for you and your individual needs.
