Rank U.S. States For Clean Water

United States of America (Press Release) September 27, 2008 -- At this time of year we have tons of stories that revolve around water... usually focused on hurricanes or natural disasters (like Hurricane Ike and its impact on Texas). At WaterFinder.org though we have been concerned about other water-related issues from scarcity of the fresh water supply to the number of contaminants in the nation's water. We decided to combine research from the EPA and EWG to compile a ranked listing of all of the states in the U.S. from the least number of contaminants to the most. Here are the top 5 states:

1. West Virginia
2. Massachusetts
3. South Dakota
4. Rhode Island
5. Oregon

Likewise, it seems prudent to point out the bottom 5 States:

46. Vermont
47. Connecticut
48. Mississippi
49. Louisiana
50. Georgia

The concerns that many have expressed is that the chemicals in the water range from agricultural pollutants to pharmaceuticals. In escence with every glass of water we drink we are drinking a cocktail of chemicals and drugs which could have unknown long-term effects on us and our children. There is a special concern as it relates to infants and the impact that these chemicals could have on them early on in their development process.

For instance, all of the pharmaceuticals reported in drinking water supplies are unregulated in treated tap water and any level is legal. Not only has the EPA failed to set standards for pharmaceuticals, but also they have failed to require utilities to test for these chemicals. Our current filtration systems both natural and man-made are not built to deal with these chemical residues.

So unlike the swift and immediately destructive force of a hurricane, this damage to the nation's water supply is a slow and gradual one, but certainly not any less significant. We are gradually destroying our fresh water supplies and in the process damaging our bodies and jeopardizing the health of our children and any future generations. We must work together to get governmental standards in place to secure and clean our water systems before it is too late. We have already done tremendous damage, but that's not a good reason to give up.

So let's take a moment to look at which States are doing better than others and keep encouraging our Federal and State representatives to fight this fight for us.
