Waisting Life:Dangers of the Corset Diet

If you thought diamonds are a girl’s best friend, corsets are a woman’s BFFs. For a lot of women, corsets can be key determinants of their wardrobe.

Girdles lacing up the small of a woman’s back, accentuating her most vulnerable parts are more like best friends to any woman than diamonds can ever be. For a lot of women, corsets are an indispensable part of their wardrobe. For over centuries, women have given this piece of clothing a compassionate glare and their welcoming hearts.

Actress Jessica Alba had declared that she wore a double corset day and night for up to three months after giving birth to each of her two children. If that was not inspiring enough, the evergreen Kim Kardashian had overjoyed hopefuls by posting a picture of her in a corset.

With this stands an important question, “Will two living examples of waist training success now make women try it?” We suggest you give it another thought because style and a hypothesized figure apart, wearing corsets renders many side-effects that may even cause death. Don’t believe us? Read on.

What is the corset diet?

Corset diet or waist training is a way of whittling down waist by wearing a corset for a few hours eventually working up to 12 hours per day.

The Good

Even though a lot of doctors have warned people against the potential for serious damage, those who promote its usage opine that it functions as a non-surgical gastric bypass sleeve. The proponents also say that women who wish to own a smaller waist need to undergo surgery to remove the rib cage, which involves hospitalisations and surgical risks. In such a scenario, corsets pose as non-invasive, non-surgical way to reshape and contour the body.

The Bad

Weight loss experts in the field hold an opposing view regarding the use of corsets for weight training. According to them, women had left corsets behind in the Victorian Era for a reason. Jyotindra Shah, M.D., Bariatric physician in Westchester, N.Y. said that the long-term use of corset can lead to bruising of internal organs, breathing and skin. Shah also added that wearing corsets can lead to lack of oxygenation, which is an important part of life. Restricting oxygenation leads to long-term damage to the hormonal imbalances.  She added that putting the corset tight on the body can bruise it and sometimes, people may wear it so tight that the liver, kidneys and spleen could get bruised too.

Expert Suggestions

There is no magic bullet to losing weight and ideally, no weight loss expert would recommend corset waist-training to their patients. In fact, to them corset training is part of a series of unsubstantiated fad diets that take advantage of people who need help to develop a healthy weight and life.

If you must want to have a thin waist, keep your weight in check by exercising and living a non-sedentary lifestyle. This natural way of life is much healthier way to look fit than wearing corset which is in fact, a bone-compressing piece of clothing that changes the shape of the waist by reshaping the ribs.
