Can Drinking Ice water help Burn Calories?

Can drinking ice water help burn calories

People looking to lose weight may look up to this question with hopes of an easy way out. Drinking iced water does help you lose weight as your body needs to spend energy to bring warmth in water. Moreover, ice cold water helps to fight the pangs of hunger, improves metabolism and prevents dehydration. Your body needs to raise the temperature of icy cold water and that does result in losing calories.

As it is a given that your body is going to use up calories, we can estimate the amount of calories being burned by some simple calculation. If you drink half a litre of ice cold water, the question is how much calories are consumed considering that water is at 0 degree Celsius. The normal body temperature is 37 degree Celsius. Now, for raising the temperature of ice cold water to normal, how much calories are burned? Given that a calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. So, 18500 calories are burned when half a litre of ice cold water is brought to normal body temperature.

If Calories are viewed with regards to the normal use of the term, i.e. a kilo-calorie, the above explanation would imply that 0.5 litre of water helps you burn 18.5 calories. This is not significant if you are serious about losing weight. Even if you persist with taking 3 litres of water daily, having all of it at 0 degrees cannot be easy, as that can have other health complications. Even if we assume that you are able to drink so much of icy cold water daily, it would help you burn 111 calories. Over a period of time, this amount of daily calories burned can be significant.

So, you cannot depend on drinking iced water alone to help you lose weight. It can be a part of your weight loss plan but cannot replace healthy lifestyle choices such as having healthy low-calorie diet, working out such as cardio, keeping a calorie count, managing your portion, eating small frequent meals, and others. You need to make sure that you burn more calories than you consume in a day, and having cold water can be one of the ways that help you burn some calories. You would also reap other benefits of drinking 3 to 4 litres of water daily such as improved metabolism.
