The average maintenance calories for woman who doesn't exercise, is around 2000 calories a day and for a man - 2500. By now you probably have figured out, that you if you are woman, you should eat 1500 calories a day, if you are a man, you should eat 2000 calories a day. Does it matter what you eat? Yes, it does. Though you can lose fat and eat whatever you want as long as you have at least 500 calories deficit, you will achieve better results if you have protein rich diet. Protein rich diet is good for two reasons. First, protein makes you feel full longer, and second, protein doesn't turn into fat as much as fats and carbohydrates does. In fact, you should eat carbohydrates only in the morning, otherwise most of them will turn into fat if you don't exercise after wards.

Successful diet is not only about what you eat, but about also what you drink. Don't drink liquids which contains any calories, because all of these calories will turn into fat. With that i mean, all you should drink is water. And drink lots of it, at least gallon a day. If you love coffee, you don't have to give it up. Actually, drinking coffee before breakfast will increase your metabolism due to fast digesting carbohydrates and fiber.

Exercising is a great way to burn fat and improve your health. If you have free time and will power, do 45 minutes of cardio 6 days a week. It might be hard to start exercising in the beginning, but your body will get used to it with time and it won't be as hard later. If you exercise 6 times a week, you might burn so much calories, that you don't need to change your diet. You should lift weights too. If you lift weights, you will build muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the more energy your body will burn to maintain it self.
