Spare Your Child From Unhealthy Weight Gain

Kids are more and more preoccupied with playing computer games, surfing the Internet, and hours and hours of watching television. As a result, children are spending less time playing outdoors with friends and enjoying other physical activities that make them fit. Now, it is quite common to see children aged 5 and above with flabby arms, big tummies and stout legs.

Many parents permit their children to grow fat and obese because they think that it would be easy for their children to lose their flab when they grow older. Other parents also think that their kids are immune to serious diseases so they really do not have to watch what they eat. However, results published in the Journal of American Medical Association show that 60% of children and teens who had sudden and unexplainable deaths have fatty deposits in the coronary arteries. Figures also show that 155 million children in the US aged between five and 17 are already overweight, while about 45 million are obese.

Parents and guardians have a responsibility to guide children and teach them how to take care of their weight. At an early age, kids should be encouraged to eat healthy and play outdoors. Here are some ways you can help your kids take better care of their health:

Give Rewards And Incentives

If you are one of the parents that provide children with rewards and incentives to do better in school or perform household chores, then you can use this system to provide your kids with play things that will encourage them to go out and break a sweat. Instead of video consoles and computer games, why not give them a bicycle, a kite, jumping rope, or rollerblades.

If you gift your children with video consoles, computer games and other things that will only make them want to stay indoors, then you are only reinforcing their sedentary lifestyle. Try giving rewards and incentives that will encourage them to sweat a little and find time for physical activities.

Control Television Hours

Kids love watching the television; thus, you cannot expect them to regulate their watching hours. It is your job as a mother, father, or guardian to set limits to the watching hours of your kids. Two hours or less of television viewing is enough for the day.

Watch What You Feed Your Children

You need to understand that not everything that is sold in the supermarket is good for your kids. You need to be picky when it comes to your kid’s snacks. Try limiting fatty and sweet foods. These are high in calories, which contribute to the widening girth of your children, but have low nutritional content.

Also, add more colors to your kid’s plate. Vegetables, such as carrots, beets, leafy greens, and corn are packed with vitamins and minerals that can contribute to your child’s health and growth. Fruits, such as apples, bananas, pears, peaches are rich in nutrients that help strengthen the immune system of your children.

Exercise As A Family

Despite your busy schedule, you ought to find time to exercise or do fun and physical activities with your kids at least three times a week. Swimming, volleyball, baseball, running, and kite flying are good activities that will help you and your children sweat a little and build more muscle.

Be A Good Example

How can you expect your teenage kid to be fit when you yourself are obese or overweight? You should try leading by example. If you are concerned about your child’s health, you should also be concerned about your own health.
