Deciding to Get into Shape is the Start to Getting Physically Fit

The biggest step in physical fitness is making the decision to do it. One can never make progress in something until he decides to start. Otherwise it's just something you sit around thinking about.

The next thing you should do is set a goal for yourself. If you don't have a goal you will just go around aimlessly for a period of time and then eventually quit. The goal can be to lose a certain amount of weight, or to get to X% of body fat or pack on muscle. Unlike that last example I gave you should make it as specific as possible. That way there is a finite goal and when you achieve it you can set a new goal. It allows you to have a definite success at what you are doing.

You should make your goals as realistic as you can. It should be something that is attainable yet still a challenge. And remember just because you set a goal doesn't mean you can't change it. Better to change an unrealistic goal than to just quit all together. The easiest thing a person can do is change their mind.

Next you should pick a type of workout. Naturally, you can choose a wide variety of types of workouts so that you don't get bored doing the same thing over and over. Your level of fitness will monitor what you can do. If you are very fit already than you can do any type of workout that you want. But if you haven't exercised for many years and you are much more overweight than you should be you'll be more limited in what you can do. But there is something for everyone!

If you've read any of my previous articles you'll know that I recommend interval training adapted to whatever form your workout takes. By that I mean short bursts of intense energy expended, rest and repeat. You can adapt any workout to interval training whether it is weights, running, swimming or walking or any other number of things.

Some people enjoy working out with someone. Some people like to work out by themselves. If you choose to workout with someone else it might be good to have more than one workout buddy, in that way if your friend can't make it on a particular day you won't have an excuse to miss your workout.

Budget may also enter in to your decisions about your workout. But it is very good news that you don't have to spend money to get into shape if you don't want to. Body weight exercises do not cost a thing and they are a very effective form of workout.

Of course, if you are going to the trouble of exercising you'll also want to start eating better too, if you haven't already been doing so. Be certain to include lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as plenty of proteins and fats (naturally I'm talking about healthy fats, not the kind you'll find in a bag of chips or order of french fries.) And it is a good idea to eat protein fairly soon after a workout so that your body can start building itself back up.

These are the basics to getting started, so start! And if you have started, good for you, continue!
