How to Get Rid of a Muffin Top

A muffin top might sound like a bad hair do (or a tasty part of a cake), but in fact it is a term used to describe a slightly undesirable gut that hangs out over the top of your trousers creating a distinct bulge that resembles a?you guessed it?a muffin top.

Of course then to get rid of the muffin top will require fat loss around that region. Unfortunately 'targeted fat loss' ?that is fat loss aimed at a specific area ?is not possible. As such you can exercise and diet, and you won't necessarily lose the weight where you want it to, but in a set 'order' specified by your genetics. For example you might find that you lose weight from your chest before you lose it from your hips and waist and there is sadly no way to change this.

What you can do however is to burn calories and lose weight until you eventually get to that area and hope that it doesn't leave you with no physique as a result. Any calorie burning activity such as running, swimming, cycling or shadow boxing will burn calories, and at the same time you should also try to eat fewer calories so that you lose more than you gain.

At the same time you can also help give yourself a flatter stomach by strengthening your abs. This alone won't help as you can still have fat over the top which will create the muffin top, but it can help to firm up what is underneath. The good news too is that muscle gain and toning can be targeted, meaning that using sit ups and crunches. Some exercises and exercise classes are also good for losing weight and toning up at the same time and particularly target 'bums and tums'. For example something like yoga or Pilates.
