How to Lose Weight in a Few Days: Caffeine as a Weight Loss Aid

Many people believe caffeine to be an excellent way of losing weight. It can:

  1. Suppress their appetite.
  2. Cause them to use their fat supplies faster during exercise, leaving more muscle glycogen intact.
  3. Increase their stamina.
  4. Take effect within 15 minutes and the effects can last for hours.
  5. Delay fatigue, also increasing stamina, and keeping energy levels high.

However, while it can feel as if you could go on exercising for longer, due to caffeine抯 appetite suppressant properties, you may not be eating enough calories to sustain exercise. Also, while it does stop you feeling hungry it could in fact cause weight gain, due to heavily sugared coffee. If you take it regularly, your body will begin to need more caffeine to achieve the same effects, which vary between individuals anyway. Caffeine is a drug, and can cause withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, drowsiness and irritability. It is a diuretic, which means that you may become dehydrated because of excessive fluid loss. This also means that a lot of the weight you may lose will probably be water weight, which will spring back on as soon as you start drinking.

Caffeine works by increasing the strength and rate of muscle contractions in the heart. As this pumps the blood around faster, more oxygen is sent to the muscles, causing improved stamina. It also acts as a vasodilator ?this means that it expands the blood vessels, allowing more blood through to the muscles, but it will make you appear very red in the face.

Caffeine is a legal, socially acceptable drug, and is readily available from many sources. You can buy it in tablet or capsule form, it can be found in coffee, tea and even chocolate. There may be more caffeine in these products than you realise, when you consider that 200-250mg of caffeine per day is the recommended limit.

  1. Coffee, instant ?90mg
  2. Tea, leaf or bag ?50mg
  3. Diet coke ?46.5mg
  4. Chocolate (dark, 1.5oz) ?30mg
  5. Tablets or capsules can vary in caffeine content, but it should be printed on the back of the packet.

How to Lose Weight in a Few Days

If you do choose to take caffeine as a weight loss aid, don抰 take it after 6, as it will keep you awake. Try to do your exercise in the morning, as this will give the effects time to wear off before you go to bed. Many people find it can upset their stomach if they exercise immediately after taking caffeine in any form, and people who don抰 normally take large amounts often experience jitters. You should be aware of these side effects whenever you have caffeine and be careful to stop your exercise if you begin to feel ill. Caffeine will raise your heartbeat, especially during exercise, but as long as you are aware of this and keep it from getting too high you should be reasonably safe.

Caffeine can be an effective weight loss aid, but it is a drug, and should be seen as such. It has its risks as well as its advantages, and these should be taken into account before you choose to take it.
