Want To Feel Happier AND Burn More Calories? Try This!

We all have the power to transform our lives. We all have the ability to create an environment where we feel more inspired, excited, and enthusiastic. We can relieve stress, calm nerves and surround ourselves with good vibes. And the best part is that while we do all that, we can also increase our activity levels and burn more calories! It sounds too good to be true but in reality, you may be holding the key to all of this bliss right this very moment.

Music is the key to unlocking happy thoughts and a more active body.

According to a new study by Sonos and Apple Music, music is a powerful medicine. They began their study by surveying 30,000 people worldwide about their music routines and found that half believe music has no impact on their lives. Crazy, right? To test these statements they took a closer look at 30 families in different countries to see how, and if, their lives changed when they played music at home.

To establish a baseline, the families were not allowed to play any music for a week. This allowed the researchers to observe the family’s ordinary activities and moods. The following week, they were allowed to play music as often as they wanted — with one catch. They had to play the music out loud. No headphones were allowed in order to maximize the social aspect of listening to music.

Music proved to have a positive impact on the mental health of the participants. (Feel even better with clean eating! Try the BodyRock 30 Day Meal Plan). They reported a 25% increase in happy feelings and a 15% decrease in worry and stress. The researchers believe this is due to the music’s ability to boost serotonin levels in the brain. The benefits of music did not end there.

“We could see that people were more active [at home] during the week with music,” the study authors wrote. “We saw that the number of steps taken increased by two percent, and the amount of calories burned went up by three percent.”

A 3% increase in calories burned equates to about 60 calories a day on a 2,000 calorie diet. That doesn’t seem like much but when you factor in the fact that it happens by doing little more than listening to your favourite songs, it is a totally free calorie burn bonus! It all counts right? Take your music to the gym and there is no telling where your workouts can go!

What do you think of this study? Do you feel happier and more active when listening to music?
