Is Your Kitchen Making You Fat?

With long work days, packed fitness regimes, and active social lives, it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to do all that you want/need to do. It is understandable if you let your housekeeping slip a little now and then. Trust us, we understand!  But, the results of a recent study may have you paying a little more attention to the cleanliness of your kitchen!

Researchers from the Cornell Food and Brand Lab wanted to test the  idea that cluttered and chaotic environments stress us out and make us more likely to reach for junk food. In their quest for answers, they discovered that a messy, cluttered kitchen caused people to consume more calories!

The study featured 98 women, half of whom were asked to wait in a clean, quiet kitchen while the other half were asked to wait in a messy kitchen with newspapers scattered on the table and dirty dishes in the sink. In both kitchens, there were bowls of cookies, crackers and carrots sitting out. The researchers found that those who were waiting in the chaotic kitchen ate more calories — especially when it came to the junk food. In fact, they ate twice as many cookies as the women who waited in the clean kitchen. It appears that the participants’ mood also played a role in their calorie consumption. Before entering the kitchen, some women were asked to write a story about a time in their lives when they felt in control while the others were asked to write about a time in their lives when they felt out of control. The group that felt in control walking into the kitchen ate 100 fewer calories than the women who felt out of control.
