Is the Ayurveda Diet Right For You?

If you have never heard of Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science, then you may be missing out on all the great benefits. It’s known that the Ayurveda diet is perfect for disease prevention, overall physical health, and it even improves mental clarity. Even in the ancient times, many people swore by this diet as it can assist in shedding those unwanted pounds, clearing up the skin, and improving digestion.

What Is Ayurveda?

The word “Ayurveda” is translated to “life knowledge.” It can teach you that living in accordance with observing cycles in nature, you will be able to maintain and restore your health. The cycles include the 24-hour sun cycle and the four seasons. This diet is structured around the cycles, which is important with this diet and eating foods that are in season. Your largest meal would be midday, while the sun is the strongest. Minimal eating is required in the evening. This is not an elimination diet at all. There are no food groups that are off limits. The goal is to actually include all six main tastes, such as astringent, pungent, bitter, sour, salty, and sweet into each meal.

There are universal rules, which are above, but there are also guidelines to follow based on each individual. Each person has their own dosha, which means biological energy for mental and physical status. There are actually three main doshas:

  • Vata, which means wind and air
  • Pitta, which means fire and water
  • Kapha, which means earth and water.

An individual who is vata is typically thin. Pittas usually have oily skin and are hot-headed at times. Kaphas are mainly grounded and usually are bigger-boned. For the diet part, an individual’s specific dosha will determine an amount and ratio that should be incorporated with the six tastes. There will also be a guideline explaining which food could be less and more beneficial to each person.

Would you ever give this diet a try?
