When it comes to losing weight, it's easy to get caught up in the daydream of what life will be like when we reach our goal. We imagine an ideal body that we want to strive for and in that distant reality, we see all the other things we long for. We think that if we can just reach that "perfect" size, we'll be set and the everything else we want will automatically fall into place.

We put so much pressure on ourselves to lose weight, but what if we have it backwards? What if we're really striving for something that goes much deeper than losing weight?

When we dream of having a better body, what we often really want is a better life. We're missing out on the things that bring us joy and pleasure, and we tell ourselves that when we lose the weight we'll finally go after those things: A better job, a nicer wardrobe, more intimacy in our relationships. Things that are independent of the size of our bodies, yet we put them off until we're happy with our size.

If you're trying to lose weight, I encourage you to ask yourself the following questions to make sure you're doing it for the right reasons, and not because you think a certain pants size will make your life infinitely better:

1. What will be different in your life when you reach your goal weight?

When you have a clear vision of where you're headed, it makes it a lot easier to stay focused on the life you're creating and not just on the number of pounds you're trying to lose.

Once you've identified what you want to be different in your life, start to think of ways to introduce hem in the here and now. Maybe you've been waiting to slim down before you sign up for that yoga teacher training you've been eyeing, or before trying that pole dancing class you keep hearing about. Whatever it is you're waiting for, what are some ways you can bring it into your life now? Give yourself permission to embark on that new adventure. Take the leap and do something that you've been waiting to do.

By bringing in more of what you want into the present, not only will that take the pressure off of losing weight, you'll be an energetic match to those things that you want more of. By the law of attraction, you'll be a lot more likely to actually attract and manifest them into your life.

2. How do you want to feel when you get there?

Once you establish how you want to feel when you reach your goal, you can consciously make the decision to infuse more of those feelings of success into your journey toward that point. The truth is, we'll never feel like we've arrived at our goal unless we have a clear picture of what that looks and feels like.

The desire to lose weight is so often a yearning for something much deeper than shedding pounds. In order to truly be successful we must identify exactly what it is we're longing for.

Maybe you're trying to lose weight so you feel sexier and more confident in your skin. Perhaps you want to feel more vibrant and have more intimacy between you and your partner. Get in touch with the feelings you want to experience and find ways to evoke more of those feelings in your daily life.

Take the time to treat yourself to a warm, sensual bath or dig out that red lipstick that's been sitting in your make up bag since the last time you felt sexy enough to wear it. Do whatever it takes to fill your life with more of the feelings you've been longing to feel. Once you're living at that higher vibration, filling your life with more of what you do want, you may even notice that it becomes easier to reach your weight loss goals after all.

We need to let go of the belief that losing weight alone is going to give us the life we're dreaming of. Without having a clear idea of what you're really striving for, your weight loss attempts will likely end in dissatisfaction when you reach your goal and see that nothing else in your life has changed but your size.

Losing weight and bettering ourselves can be a beautiful thing, but without knowing where we're headed, we'll never find happiness in a number on the scale.
