You’ve read the books, and listened to the experts, and everyone's saying something different! Celebrities, doctors, and even firemen are writing diet books! It’s confusing. I get it. Though there are a million different ideas out there, in my personal and professional experience, there are a few tried and true methods of eating for your best life, no matter what.

Here are my seven tried and true, no nonsense, completely doable tips for eating to feel the best you've ever felt!

1. Don’t eat foods that don’t agree with you.

This could be dairy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, citrus, soy, tomatoes, or anything else. If you aren’t sure which foods these are, you can start by keeping a diary of foods and moods.

Write down (without altering what you would eat) in a calendar or notebook what you're eating and how you feel or any physical symptoms. Look back over the week and see if certain foods correlate to certain moods or physical discomfort.

2. Rest regularly and sufficiently.

Your body needs to be in a “rest and digest” state to assimilate nutrients and release waste. Getting enough sleep is also important for good decision making and we make hundreds of eating decisions a day, so that adds up!

3. Don’t eat foods that you don’t want to eat.

Sliced turkey with prunes anyone? I look at some of the recipe sections of diet books and just have to say, HELL NO! Eating foods you don’t like, or that you can’t imagine eating for more than a week, just doesn’t make sense.

If your teeth were rotting out of your mouth, would you brush them for a week and then move on with your life? That one week doesn’t matter if you can’t make a long-term change and sustain new health habits.

4. Take a quality probiotic.

Preliminary research shows that one difference between overweight and normal weight people is their gut flora. You have to get the healthy flora into your digestive track and then feed them with vegetables, fruit and fiber.

5. Don’t eat fake food.

This could be, but is not limited to, sweeteners, dyes, or preservatives. These foods trick your body into secreting hormones that actually increase hunger over time.

6. Exercise.

For most people five hours a week is a good amount.

7. Most importantly, love your body and appreciate everything it has done for you.

Practice directing peaceful thoughts towards yourself and where you are on your journey. Whether it’s tapping, meditation, deep breathing, blow drying your hair, whatever brings you calm will help your body process and digest what you are eating.

I have maintained a healthy weight by eating kale and quinoa, and by drinking beer and eating Oreos. While food is a key component of weight loss, sometimes there is more to the story.

Your body tells the story of your health so make sure it’s a good one.
