Morbid Obesity Statistic Shows Alarming Figures

According to recent research morbid obesity statistics show a dramatic increase in obesity in the world in a period of ten years. Morbid obesity has increased among all age groups, education levels, genders and ethnic groups.

Age Groups

It has been proved that older people are more prone to suffer from morbid obesity than the younger generation. As per the morbid obesity statistics, young men and women between the ages of 16 and 24 are obese. This shows a percentage of only 28 % of men and 27 % of women. But in the age group between 55 and 64, the numbers are alarmingly high, showing 76 % of men and 68 % of women being morbid obese.

In the US, according to morbid obesity statistics, about two-thirds of the adults are overweight, and about one-third are obese and morbid obese. It is estimated that about 63 % of Americans are obese, and the ratio of the men and the women is the same. It means that most of them have a BMI of 25 or more.

If the statistics of the past two decades is taken into consideration, the percentage of childhood obesity in America has more than tripled. If it continues to increase in the same manner, the prediction stands, that by 2020, at least one-third of the American adults will be obese. But the morbid obesity statistic is even worse, because the US surgeon general report reveals that thousands of people will die every year due to morbid obesity.

In England

In England, for example, the numbers are less frightening, with the morbid obesity statistic showing only 17 % of men and 21 % of women belonging to this category. Though the number of adults who are obese has doubled in the last 25 years, the figures are not alarming. But there are a large number of obese children in England, and statistics show that 13 % of 8 year olds and 17 % of 15 year olds are obese.

Differences

It is possible that statistics about morbid obesity may differ from one study to another and from one part of the world to another. There are varied definitions of the disease and this affects the prevalence statistics, and makes it difficult to compare data from different studies. Prevalence means the total number of existing cases of morbid obesity in a given population at a given time. Some of these rates are presented as crude estimates, while others are age-adjusted estimates. Unadjusted or crude estimates and age-adjusted estimates will give slightly different values, and hence there are often differences in the morbid obesity statistics.

In order to combat the negative effects of morbid obesity, various types of treatments are available for it. One option is to follow a strict diet and add regular exercise to your schedule. Medication also helps and the last option is obesity surgery, which has become very popular today. Even after surgery, the diet and exercise have to be continued to ensure longer and healthier life.
