How To Move Your Body

Living in New York City, exercise is almost naturally built into your lifestyle. Unless you have a hired chauffeur, during the typical day you will most likely walk to the bus stop or subway station, walk to the market or any other shopping you need to do and even walk to the bar or restaurant at night.

I always made the choice to walk to work each day, even on the most cold, bitter mornings, it was a way to get some exercise in and see the city each day. If you have a dog, then you also get some built-in exercise.

But what if you don't have a dog, don't live in Manhattan or another big city and need to drive your car to work every day for practical reasons? There are still ways to incorporate exercise into your day, every day.

Do you have a lunch break? If so, spend it out walking. You don't need a destination, but take a page out of the French or Italian man's book and just take a stroll through the city or through the park or through the mall or whatever. You don't have to power walk, you just have to move. Can you run some of your errands on foot? Then do so.

If your work day is too busy, can you get outside and walk after your dinner? Or are you stuck inside in a bitter cold climate? My cousin lives in Minnesota and what he does for exercise during those winter months is sets up his DVD player with the P90x program. He first did it to lose weight and now he just does it to stay fit.

There are DVDs and also television programs for all sorts of indoor activities. You can find something that suits your interest and personalities and then just make a commitment to stick to it. Do you have a basement and/or upstairs level on your house or apartment? Make a little routine of taking the stairs from top to bottom several times a day. It is even better if you live in an apartment building.

My second apartment in New York City was a fourth floor walkup with some 150 steps. Just hauling my own body up those stairs at least once a day kept me fit, not to mention the days I brought groceries home.

Do you live in a car dependent area? Make it a habit to park as far away as possible from your destination.

Believe me, all these little steps (no pun intended) add up.

Joining a gym is also another great option if you have the money to spare. You not only get exercise from the treadmill, yoga classes, weight lifting, swimming or whatever, but you also have a chance to socialize.

Not the gym type? Chances are whatever type of exercise or physical activity you like; you can find a way to do it with others online. Look on the Meet Up or Craigslist sites for groups who play volleyball, do fencing, play broomball, or what have you.

Remember that once you find what works for you, it is the simple steps that will eventually add up to keeping you fit and healthy.
