How Many Calories Should I Eat A Day?...In order to know how many calories should you eat a day you have to determine your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR); Your BMR is simply the minimum amount of calories your body requires on a daily basis to complete it's base functions, such as biochemical functions, keeping your heart beating, or any other base function to stay alive.

Your Basal Metabolic Rate Or BMR can be determine by two mathematical formulas the English BMR And The Metric BMR.

After you know your BMR you can calculate your daily calories needs; You have to factor the amount of calories use during digestion, and your daily calorie expenditure based on your activity level using the Harris Benedict Equation (This is a formula that uses your BMR and then determine your total daily energy expediture (Calories).

Now that you know the number of calories needed to maintain your weight you can easily calculate the number of calories you need to eat a day in order to gain, or lose weight to meet your personal healthy goals.

How many calories should I eat a day?

It's possible to determine the number of calories you should eat and you should burn each day to lose weight; Most people can lose weight eating around 1500 calories; The rough estimate for the energy contained in one pound of fat=3500 calories; However 3500 calories will not produce a pound of muscle (It takes more than that); But it's a good starting point!

The following question is the foundation for you to understand how many calories you should eat a day!

First we will determine how many calories should you burn per day to lose one pound of fat per week?...One pound of fat=3500/7(days)=500 calories per day!...You should burn 500 calories per day to lose one pound of fat per week!

Step 1 .- You have to assess your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) using The English BMR Formula:

Women: BMR=655+(4.35xYour weight in pounds)+(4.7xYour hight in inches)-(4.7xYour age in years).

Men: BMR=66+(6.23xYour weight in pounds)+(12.7xYour height in inches)-(6.8xYour age in years).

An example to understand the above formula:

Tony....Hi Maria...Before I answer your question I need the following information in order to determine your BMR.

Your weight in pounds=165 pounds
Your height in inches= 5.3(5x12=60+3)=63 inches.
Your age in years=37 years.
Maria's BMR=655+(4.35x165)+(4.7x63)-(4.7x37)
=655+717.75+296.10-173.9
=1494.95
=1495

Tony....Maria your BMR=1495 calories

Maria....So..1495 is the amount of calories I should eat a day!

Tony.....No Maria this is the minimum amount of calories your body requires on a daily basis to complete it's base functions to stay alive!.
