Helpful Weight Loss Tips for Teens

Life can be difficult for some overweight teens these days. I can testify to this as I have gone through this with one of my own sons. He was a freshman in school and he weighed over 200 pounds. He encountered numerous problems riding the bus because other kids would make fun of him and make crude remarks about him being fat. As we all know, some kids can be very cruel to others and this only hurts their self-esteem. This also affected his personality and well as his schoolwork in a negative way. After a long struggle with his weight, he was finally able to lose over 30 pounds by changing his diet and exercising more and best of all, he was able to keep the weight off. Here are a few tips for teens to help them achieve their weight loss goals.

One of the most important things for teens today is acceptance and wanting to fit in and weight and appearance play a major role in this. If your teen is overweight or just wants to get rid of a little extra fat, this can be accomplished by eating the proper foods and by choosing a good exercise program and sticking to it.

There are some things that you cannot control such as puberty and genetics. Boys and girls both gain weight and height during puberty as hormones are released which cause boys to gain muscle and girls to increase body fat.

Genetics are also a factor in weight gain for teens. You inherit many things from your parents such as how tall you will be and what shape your body will be. If your parents are overweight, then that increases the chances that you will be overweight too.

While you may not be able to control puberty or genetics, you can control your diet. By eating the proper foods and avoiding foods such as french fries, fast foods, sodas, chips, and sweets, you can avoid adding extra calories and fat to your body intake. You need to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your everyday diet.

Teens also need to get proper exercise. Sitting around watching television or playing most video games can add to a teen's weight problem. If you are not active, this can have a major effect on your waist line and your health. They need to get outside and get some form of physical exercise. Even walking is a great way to get a good workout and to lose some weight.

They also need to drink plenty of water. It is a proven fact that water aids in weight loss and it is also good for your metabolism as well as other parts of you body including your kidneys. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to get the full benefits for your body. This will also keep your body properly hydrated and keep it in good working condition.
