Dieting Found To Make Dieters Grouchy and Upset

Dieting and losing weight may make people happy in the long run if they succeed in their efforts, but dieting itself tends to make dieters feel grouchy and upset instead of joyful.

A recent research study determined that when someone is trying to stick to a diet, the effort to resist foods that they are depriving themselves of, can make a dieter prone to attacks of frustration where they may lash out at someone around them.

The study was done by looking at the way dieters versus people who ate whatever they liked, acted around their fellow human beings.  The results showed that dieters got upset much faster than non-dieters when they had to view a pushy commercial about the need to exercise to lose weight.

The whole idea behind the study was to see if a person could keep their self control, but still get mad easier due to the effort to keep it.  The study resulted in dieters being much more likely to lash out in anger than non-dieters.  This didn’t always show in interactions with other people, sometimes it just seemed to make the dieters more prone to doing things related to being irritated or mad such as wanting to go see a movie where a lot of people were showing anger, and wanted to be around other people who also felt the same sort of anger.

The study also showed that when a person wasn’t restricted and could choose if they wanted to eat, for example, candy instead of fruit, that they were more interested in calmer movies than the dieters, who chose angry styles of films.

Similar results were seen in other experiments during the testing where the dieters and non-dieters were put into other similar types of scenarios.

The research study concluded that instead of pushing people to make them show self control in things like dieting, that a better way to encourage them needs to be developed.
