Can kinesiology help with weight loss? Melanie Hearse investigates

Kinesiology’s a bit like a Magic 8 ball. Rather than asking you diagnostic questions, and relying on your conscious mind and intellect for answers, kinesiologists look to your muscles and movement for answers about what’s going on in your body (human kinetics, is the scientific study of human movement).

It’s no secret that we’re not aware of many thoughts and beliefs we hold, so it stands to reason to bypass the head and converse with the body. The body equivalent of the Magic 8 Ball’s answer is known as ‘biofeedback’. According to the Australian Kinesiology Association (AKA), the west-meets-east discipline uses different techniques to facilitate the body’s natural ability to heal. Think gentle rubbing, holding or tapping of acupressure points, use of flower essences, visualisation, and using techniques tailored to clearing sabotage patterns and re-patterning the belief system.

How does it work for weight loss?
Holistic kinesiologist Heidi Drieschner (heartspacekinesiology.com.au) says she uses muscle monitoring as part of a range of holistic tools to identify where a client may be “stuck”. “Muscle monitoring helps to bypass the brain to get to the underlying stress behind why a person may feel stuck, and as a result can’t achieve their goal.”

Typical treatment
The AKA says a session (commonly known as ‘a balance’) is typically an hour. However, the initial session may be longer, as the kinesiologist needs to take your history before you get started. You’ll then either remain seated or lie face-up on a massage table, fully clothed. The practitioner will then apply muscle monitoring techniques to identify your issues and determine the best strategies to assist in reinstating your body’s natural balance.
