Diet Supplement Side Effects

Dietary supplements are the supplements which fulfill the nutrient requirement of our body and make up for the insufficient nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, fiber, enzymes, fatty acids, proteins, calcium etc.

Diet supplements are present in many forms such as pills; capsules etc and have many benefits and uses. But at the same time, diet supplements also have many side effects. Most people buy these supplements from pharmacies without the doctor’s consultation and without knowing the possible risks but this should be avoided since some side effects can also be fatal.

If you wish to know about the various side effects of dietary supplements, then you can read the following given information:

  • The risk of liver damage is one of the most common and serious side effects of consuming dietary supplements. This happens mainly when a particular dietary supplement is taken regularly and in excess amounts. While the excess of the supplements pass through the urine, some might make their way through the liver and can prove to be toxic. This can be injurious to the liver and may even cause death in some rare cases.
  • Some common and less serious side effects of diet supplements include headaches, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, dizziness and constipation etc. These side effects do not last long and can also be easily cured if the dietary supplements are stopped taken temporarily.
  • Some dietary supplements may not prove to be as effective as they claim to be and the label on the supplement must be read to ensure that it does not contain any toxic or unnatural ingredient.
  • There are certain supplements like aloe vera, fenugreek and vanadium etc which should not be taken before a surgery because they can result in excessive bleeding. These supplements should be avoided for atleast 2 weeks before the surgery.
