Fall Health Trends With a Twist

Health and fitness trends come and go, but these fall health trends are fun ways to lose weight just in time for the New Year.

Dance the Weight Away

Most people do not realize that dancing isn't just for dancers. Dancing is a fun way to burn fat and get in shape without the grueling workout factor. Dancing is an excellent way for new fitness aficionados to ease their way into a workout routine or for fitness veterans to mix up their workout. This popular workout trend is perfect if you who do not like to be constrained to a routine because it doesn't feel like a chore. Popular dance workouts include Zumba, SH'BAM, where the average person burns 510 calories in the 45 minute class, and Bokwa, where the average person burns a whopping 1200 calories per workout. Bring your friends or family for support and accountability and get ready to dance your way into a trim body.

Run to the Finish Line

Marathons and traditional races are also some great ways to shed those pounds and get your blood flowing. You could sign up for the traditional half marathons and 5k's in and around your community, or you could try out the new trend in fitness, novelty races. Novelty races are a fancy term for a simple twist on traditional marathons and other running events. Take the Color Run for example. It's a 5k, also known as the happiest 5k on the planet. You'll start the race in your clean white shirt and finish it completely plastered in color. Did we mention that leading the pack of runners is a unicorn?

If you're looking for a more traditional route, you could try the Spartan Race, the world's leading obstacle race series.Obstacle races have grown in popularity in recent years, and this means that there's likely to be one near you soon. You don't need worry about being in peak physical shape in order to compete, but a few weeks of preparation in the gym will make the experience far more enjoyable and rewarding.

Our bistroMD family has participated in the Spartan Race. Check out our pictures from the race here.

Mobile Fitness Classes

It's probably no surprise that mobile fitness classes are on the rise. Technology is everywhere and almost everyone has a smart phone. Mobile fitness classes are convenient and much easier for those with a busy lifestyle to fit into their schedules. You don't even have to leave your home. How easy is that? Thanks to technology, you can now stream live fitness classes to your laptop, iPhone or iPad. Join the class as it happens, from the comfort of your living room.

Playful Workouts

According to a survey by the American Cancer Society, 40% of women would exercise more if it felt like less of a chore. Your local fitness clubs listened and as a result, new and improved fitness classes that add a little fun into your life are on the rise. They include: cheerobics (cheerleading meets aerobics), ballet-inspired workouts, skipping rope or hula hooping. You could also try these innovative fusion classes: Piloxing (Pilates and kickboxing) or Kayoga (kayaking mixed with yoga).

Health Drinks that Will Give You a Boost

To switch up your routine and give you a burst of energy, try drinking coconut water instead of regular water. Its super-hydrating and ideal after a workout because of its essential electrolytes including calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Green tea is also an excellent choice for a quick burst of energy. It's also perfect for those crisp fall mornings.
