After Gastric bypass

Question
I had full open gastric bypass Dec. 2001, I did lose 175Lbs. For about 7 months now I have been getting sick alot ( Flu like systems, Tiredness, anything that is going around) It just seems like I can not stop my self from getting any virus or flu that is going around. Someone told me it is because after Bypass your immune system is not functioning correctly. Is this true?

Answer
Caroline,
For the most part, folks who have undergone gastric bypass and achieved a lower weight are just as healthy and resilient as those around them who never suffered from obesity.  HOWEVER, this happy experience depends on normal nutrition including normal vitamin levels.  Normal nutrition and vitamin levels depend on your taking your recommended vitamins AND seeing your bariatric surgeon (or bariatric medical specialist) periodically for life.

Since you seem to be getting sick more than you expect, I strongly recommend for you to get back with your bariatric surgeon to have your nutrition labs checked and to be sure you are not missing any vitamins.

Best wishes,
Dr JP
