GAS/Bloating

Question
Good Day;

I had RNY surgery on April 8th and I am very bloated and gassy. I burp a lot. I just want to know if this is normal and can i hurt my pouch from burping too much. Also what can I use to help with the gas as my stomach is new. I have had no complications so far and I want to keep it that way but the gas and burping is annoying. I basically burp the most when I eat.  Thanks. Molly

Answer
Molly,
It is a little-known fact that all the gas you burp comes from air that you swallow.  I suggest you closely monitor yourself while swallowing liquids (especially) and also food.  The good news is that this gassiness is more of a bother than a danger - I don't think you can hurt your pouch from swallowing too much ari or having too much burping.

Best of luck,
Dr JP
