pregency and lapband

Question
I am going for a pregnancy test today and i am almost 3 yrs. out from being banded.  My question is if i am pregnant do i have to get my band unfill all the way or can they leave some in, I have a 4cc band and i have 3.2cc in my band. Will I need to let my band Dr. know right away or can i wait untill i feel like i am to tight. How soon after pregnancy can you start getting fills?  Thanks Catrece

Answer
Catrece,
I hope the pregnancy test was positive, and that congratulations are in order!

Band surgeons have different opinions about pregnancy and opening the Band.  Some believe it should be opened completely, but I think this is the minority view.  Some would open it slightly, and others would follow along and see how you are doing.

For me, the key thing is for you to see your Band surgeon and his/her team, and discuss the pregnancy with them to make a plan.  Any management (change) that you and your Band may need is way easier to take care of on a planned basis than some emergency if you feel blocked all of a sudden.

So definitely, make an appointment to see your Band team and work it out with them.  Several different approaches are OK.

Best of luck!
Dr JP
