Pregnancy after lap-band surgery?

Question
Hi, I recently had lap-band surgery on November 5th and was wondering how long before it is safe for me to start trying for a family? I have read that its recommended to wait 18 months, but was wondering if there would be major problems if I were to become pregnant within the next few months?

Answer
Sue,
As you probably understand, the concern about pregnancy in the early time period following weight loss surgery is related to possible deficiencies for the developing baby.  No one knows what time is truly safe after surgery, but everyone I know of agrees that a time frame less than one year after surgery is too soon to become pregnant on purpose.

My recommendation to my patients is to wait until their weight is stable for at least 2 months.  For Band patients that may be a year, or two years, or more after surgery.

The other huge key is to make sure that you do take the supplements recommended by your surgeon, and to take them well before you become pregnant.  The reason is that much of the baby's key development happens before you even know you are pregnant.

Having said all that, if you happen to be pregnant currently I strongly recommend you confer with your surgeon and your obstetrician.

Best of luck!
Dr JP
