Big Belly

Question
Hi
I am a 50 year old healthy male, a bit chubby, but with a very pronounced abdomen.
I look like I have a huge beer belly,but I dont drink,I dont eat much and I eat healthy,and I exercise.
Its very frustrating as my legs and arms are not fat just my middle, but I still have to buy extra large clothes for a 5'7" frame.
I have been tested for thyroid,food allergy,everything.
It could be genetic as my Dad and uncle were like this, but they were also big drinkers and meat and potato guys which I am not.
Any suggestions at all appreciated!

Answer
Hi Carl,

Thank you for your email.
Thyroid is usually a common cause as it is correlated to how fast your metabolic rate is. When you are tested, the medical tests only test hypothyroidism originating from the thyroid gland.

Secondary Hypothyroidism originates from the pituitary gland and occurs if the pituitary gland does not create enough thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to induce the thyroid gland to produce enough thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Although not every case of secondary hypothyroidism has a clear-cut cause, it is usually caused by damage to the pituitary gland, as by a tumor, radiation, or surgery.

Tertiary Hypothyroidism originates from the hypothalamus. This results when the hypothalamus fails to produce sufficient thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH prompts the pituitary gland to produce thyrotropin (TSH). Hence may also be termed hypothalamic-pituitary-axis hypothyroidism.

Remember, thyroid hormone is the master metabolism hormone. If your thyroid is out of balance, your metabolism is out of balance, too.

Many women will tell you, we all put on more weight on certain areas and in some people certain areas never gain weight! This is usually genetic and is quite normal although frustrating.

I would like to recommend a book that you might find helpful as I have known it to work on several people with a somewhat similar problem.

Also I'd recommend the use of supplements that protect your thyroid, such as vitamins A and D, selenium, zinc and fish oil.
