life expectancy of implant used in lap band surgery

Question
I want very much to get lap band surgery either with the equipment made by the Lap Band company or the Realize company.  I overheard someone at the weight loss seminar say that the implant does not last forever, that it has to be replaced at some point.  Is this true for both company's products?  What is the life expectancy for the implant?

Answer
Hi:

Honestly, I've heard various positions.  According to numerous bariatric surgeons that I've spoken with, as well as medical device manufacturers, the adjustable bands should out live you.  My guess is that they talk about the potential need for replacement more to cover their bases should you be one of the few that does have an equipment issue. While Band replacements themselves due to a Band failure are rare, people do need revisions for tubing issues and port issues.  Also, revisions themselves with Bands for other reasons--due to weight gain/insufficient weight loss, erosion, esophageal dilation, and lifestyle issues (tired of PBing, etc.)--are more common.

I do not know of any difference between JNJ's Realize Band and Allergan's Lap-Band on these issues.

Good luck,
Karla
