Answer
Hi Kim:

I'm sorry but I'm an American.  From what I can tell, it's tough to say  if the NHS would cover your surgery.  It depends on your local PCT.  You can read more here:  http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=13

Try the site www.obesityhelp.com and look for the British forums.  They may know more.

At 14, it's going to be a tough fight, but if you can get your GP on board, you might just have a chance.  With a BMI of 39, there's a good chance you could be quite successful with either a Lap-Band or Gastric Sleeve.  I would work with your GP to show that you're a good candidate...who is committed to succeeding.  Don't give up if they say no at first... just show that you're persistent.  Here's an article you can show your GP which might help get him/her on your side: http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/news-284969-98.html

Talk to your GP about the self-harming too.  Be honest.  It's not good, as I'm sure you know... and perhaps it will help him realize that you do need help with the weight thing.

Please be kind to yourself.  Dieting sucks...and it rarely works... so stop beating yourself up about being unsuccessful on a diet.  Keep up with exercise, even if it doesn't lead to weight loss it will make you healthier and help your mood... and also make surgery easier should you get it. :)  Eat fruit and veg because it's good for you... not about weight loss.  I also recommend reading some of the fat-positive literature.  See if you can find a copy of the book "Fat?So!" by Marilyn Wann or "Zaftig: A Case for Curves."  Also the book "Rethinking Thin" by Gina Kolata may help you understand the science behind being fat and help you realize that it's not all your fault.

You know...there are guys out there who prefer big girls...even bigger than you. :)  The problem is that most 14-16 year old boys are too worried about what their friends think to express that preference.  But, they do exist.

Hope this helps. :)
