Question
I am eagerly investigating bariatric surgery. I weigh 230 lbs and am 5'3". I am 47 and have a ICD due to a low EF and years of weight and high blood pressure. Am I a candidate with the heart issues. I am so praying that these issues won't be a hindrance but an urgent reason to proceed with the surgery. Please give your opinions or where I may further study.

Answer
Ms. French,
You are correct that your cardiac issues lead to some increase in risk, and will need to be handled correctly around surgery.  It is also the case that your cardiac issues will make you less able to tolerate the excess weight over time, so that bariatric surgery does appear to be a reasonable option based on the information you provided.

To explore this further, I recommend you seek out a Center of Excellence surgical program in your local area, then check their website and/or visit with the team in person.  You may find Center of Excellence programs at:

Best of luck!
