Question
I think I look fine, and I am very fit. But I want to look better. I am not a very big girl, average height.......about 168cm and weigh 63kg....I am quite toned but putting on about 5 kgs in fat over the holidays put a bit of chubb around the edges and made my hips bigger. I love food. I dance.....and I've been trying to eat healthier, but I always manage to eat something kind of bad for me. How can I loose 5kgs without going on some hefty diet, I want to see changes!  Ps I am 19 years old.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Callie,
The basic way to lose weight is to eat less and move more, but you know that already. :)
You can try doing some walking lunges, which look a bit like this: http://www.ehow.com/video_2280116_do-walking-lunges.html I do these and they do great things for my thighs. For your hips, you might want to try squats, but point your toes out like you are doing plies in ballet. To exercise even more, try holding a nice weight as you squat.

Increasing cardio is always a great way to increase your calorie usage.

As far as food goes, if you're going to eat fats, make sure they're good ones -- like the ones found in avocados, olive oil, and nuts (especially almonds). Don't forget to increase your fiber intake. Foods high in fiber make you feel fuller faster, so you don't wind up eating as much, but get great nutrients. It also takes your body longer to process fiber-rich foods, so you're putting your body to work.

All that to say, watch your portion sizes. Try to keep high calorie foods to a handful. No more than that. Drink lots of water, exercise harder than you think you have to, and you'll be dropping those kgs in no time. Good luck!

Best,
Deb
