South Beach diet questions

Question
Hi! I've recently started the South Beach Diet and am not for sure if some food products I'd like to eat are included in the First Phase. Could you tell me if Refried Beans, Salsa, Chili, or Campbell's Tomato Soup or Bean/Bacon soup (if I don't eat the bacon) are allowed? thanks!

Answer
Most of those foods are OK in tiny amounts. So it would be fine to put a tablespoon of salsa in your egg-white omelet, but not OK to have a big bowl of restaurant chili. If you make the chili yourself at home with extra lean (at least 90%) ground beef or lean turkey (again at least 90% lean), portion it out into small half cup or one cup containers, and eat it for lunch alongside a salad, then that's allowed. The Campbell's soups are no-nos-pretty much anything from Campbell's is empty calories loaded with preservatives and chemicals and more salt than you should eat in a week. Donate all those cans to your local food bank.
And finally remember the number one difference between people who keep weight off and people who eventually gain everything back-keeping a food journal. Either start one on paper or use an online service. www.fitday.com and www.sparkpeople.com are both totally free.
Good luck!
Melissa
