The Paleo Diet - A Viable Weight Loss Diet For You?

For several years now, people have been on the Paleo diet. It's status as a "fad diet" is still hotly debated. The idea of it seems legitimate but the practices seem kind of funky, not to mention every year it seems to pop up in some new incarnation. So-called experts make changes to it depending on which health and weight loss fads are popular at the time. But the diet remains true to its core. According to its inventors, the Paleo diet mimics what the early humans ate supposedly. Here are some facts about the Paleo diet to help you figure out whether it is right for your weight loss needs.

The Paleo diet chiefly consists of eating natural foods, including meat. Basically, you'd be staying away from factory farmed, hormone-filled meat and instead be consuming grass-fed, hormone-free meat. So if you're going to keep eating meat, go with the healthiest type there is. This also applies to the vegetables and fruits you're allowed to eat in this diet. In this diet, you're allowed to eat only pesticide free and organic produce. This makes the Paleo diet a healthier diet than most of the other diet programs you can follow.

Are you a meat eater? The you'll like this diet because it wants you to get your protein from animals, specifically meat. The diet won't force you to eliminate meat from your diet entirely, but it does advocate eating the meat from grass fed, hormone free animals, preferably the wild ones instead of factory farm meat. Only the leanest meat cuts are recommended for consumption in this diet. As a result, you'd be able to cut down on calories, cholesterol, and unhealthy fats. For many people, the Paleo diet is easy to stick to because it doesn't call for any drastic lifestyle change such as eliminating meat from the diet. You should already know that drastic changes in diet usually fail.

There are versions of this diet that doesn't allow eating any grains, and all versions of this diet does not allow the consumption of processed food. There are diets similar to this (Atkins comes to mind) that have proven to be quite unhealthy. Nonetheless, if you want to lose weight, try consuming natural foods.

It's your choice whether or not to follow the Paleo diet. This diet has a number of incarnations so if you end up not liking the first one you try, it's easy to get on a new one.
