Things To Consider When Preparing To Lose Weight

When considering a new weight loss program or making drastic changes to your diet, it is recommended that you see your doctor. This is a great time to get in and get a physical if you haven't had one in a while. If you have recently had a physical it is still recommended that you consult your doctor and let him know about your diet plans. By letting your doctor know your plans, you can discuss any health concerns and get approval before starting. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

When considering a new diet there are a few questions you should ask yourself:

* Why do you want to lose weight?
* Are you truly committed to the process of losing weight?
* Do you have a support system, maybe a friend or weight loss group that will be able to help you along the way?
* Will you be able to continue even if you make a few mistakes?

Make sure you answer these questions honestly, because it will only help you in the long run. Please remember that you are only human and humans make mistakes. You have to allow for a few slip ups without wanting to just give up and stop.

Before you start your new diet plan you need to prepare yourself both emotionally and mentally for the changes you are about to undertake. You are going to have some ups and downs along the way and you have to be prepared so you can overcome them. There might be weeks you don't lose as much as you hoped or don't lose anything at all, but you can't let it get you down or all of your hard work will be lost.

Four Areas to Change

To effectively lose weight you will need to change four essential aspects of your life:

* What you eat
* How you eat
* Your feelings about food
* Your activity level

I'm not going to sugarcoat it for you. Losing weight is hard work but maintaining your weight loss is even harder. The good news is you can do it and you will succeed if you have your heart set on it.

Positive Effects

Your weight effects more than just your appearance, it also effects:

* Your overall quality of life
* Self-esteem
* Health risks
* More

There are many positive changes you will experience when you start losing weight and feeling good.

Be realistic in your expectations. Losing 30lbs in a month is not likely to happen, but you can lose ten pounds in a month. Setting smaller, more attainable goals will help you stay focused on your goals.

Choosing the Right Plan

Don't pick a plan that consists of foods you dislike because you will only be setting yourself up to fail. Choose your plan carefully as you have many different options. You don't have to follow any plan completely. Adapt it to your liking so it works for you. If you pick a plan you hate, with foods you dislike how will you maintain your weight after you achieve your weight goal? For this reason you have to make sensible changes to your everyday eating habits so it's long term.

If you are an emotional eater you need to learn how to divert your emotions to something besides eating. Go for a walk, write in your journal, or call a friend or family member you can talk to. It will happen but you can overcome it.

Health Risks

There is a real health risk associated with being overweight that can't be ignored:

* Diabetes
* High blood pressure
* Heart disease
* High cholesterol

All of these risks are life threatening. It's far better to practice healthy eating now to prevent health issues.

Genetics, ethnicity, your environment and more can effect your weight loss efforts. There are some things you will not be able to change. Also keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for you for these very same reasons.

If you are looking to lose weight for the long term, it will be hard work. There is no quick fix or magic pill. If a person or product is taunting you with only needing to take a pill, this will only work in the short run. Sure the pill will help you lose weight fast, but will it keep it off? Chances are the weight will come back, so for long-term results you have to put in the time and work. Just remember the old adage "if it seems too good to be true, than most likely it is."
