Using Food to Heal Emotions

Who hasn’t drowned their sorrows in a tub of ice cream? Or pigged out on Friday night to compensate for feeling alone?

If we only ate when we were physically hungry, we would many more healthy people in our country. Instead, we eat mostly for emotional reasons. We often eat to fill in the psychic hole in our stomachs and to cover up emotional pain with something comforting, like the soothing creamy feeling that food can bring.

To become healthier, we need to observe our emotions relative to food, and learn how to do the right work which will allow us to feel comfortable with our emotions. We need to learn to put love in our tummies on our own, rather than using food for that. We also need to learn to satisfy only true hunger - that's not easy, but it's necessary to work on it.

One suggestion many dieticians make is to keep a food journal. If you write down not only what you eat, but what you are feeling when you eat it, it may help you become more aware of your own emotional eating patterns.

Another tip is to be aware of how often you are eating because you are lonely or bored. If you are eating out of boredom then do something to keep yourself from being bored! Make a list of physical activities you can do that will keep you occupied, such as jogging, swimming, going to the gym, meeting up with a friend, going shopping, etc.
