Tips On How To Lose Weight After Giving Birth

Let me say at the outset, there is no silver bullet or easy way to lose weight after pregnancy. Losing weight after having a baby is not easy, but it is not impossible. It merely requires patience, a positive attitude and above all, dedication and perseverance. Starting out with realistic expectations for the time it will take to achieve your goal and having the dedication to see it through is the key to your success.

During pregnancy, a woman gains between 25 and 30 lbs, on average. A new Mother might lose between 10 and 15 lbs of that during labor and immediately after delivery, leaving from 10 to 25 of additional weight on her body after pregnancy. On average, a loss of no more than one or two pounds per week can be expected, meaning that to lose the 10 to 25 pounds of weight gained during pregnancy can take anywhere from two months to two years.

Now, having hopefully put you in the right frame of mind, let us go over a few suggestions for ways to get rid of that unwanted weight postpartum:

No Need To Start Right Away.

You do no need to start your weight reduction immediately after having your baby. You need to give your body time to recover from the changes it experienced during pregnancy. Avoid weight loss dieting of any sort for at least three months after giving birth. One should not worry about exercise at this stage - rather make sure you remain active and moving around. A good indicator of when to start your weight loss drive is your menstrual cycle. When this gets back to normal is the time to start a more active diet and execise regime.

Slow and Steady

Do not rush head long into a strenuous exercise program. Remember your body is still recovering from the changes it underwent during pregnancy, so rushing straight into a heavy exercise routine may course more harm than good. Taking regular walks in the park with the baby is an excellent way of preparing your body for the more rigorous exercise regime to come.

Plan For Success.

Planning for success means having plenty of fresh, healthy food in the house, so that when you feel the urge to eat something you will have only the right kind of food around to choose from. Also, grazing on several smaller meals during the day is much better than eating two or three big meals. Most importantly, do not try to lose weight by starving yourself. This is not good for your baby, particularly if you are breast feeding, and you will almost always find yourself binging on something later to compensate.

Be Patient.

Finally, have patience with yourself. As I said at the start of this article, losing weight after pregnancy is not an easy task and the time taken to reach your goal will be different for everyone. So do not compare yourself to others and instead focus on sticking to the task at hand and results will surely come in due course. The period of time following pregnancy is stressful enough without burdening yourself with unrealistic expectations.
