Lap Band option for the 30 BMI patients

Question
I am 5'7" and 170 lbs. I've tried all the diets out there but still can't keep the weight off. I have a family history of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. I've seem to run out of options. Is there a Lap Band type of procedure available for folks who overweight but not obese?

Answer
Diane,
The information you've provided puts you at a BMI of 27.  I can see where it would be great for you to lose weight but I don't think the medical risk you have at your current weight is great enough to merit the risk of surgery, even the minimally invasive gastric band.

I know this leaves you in an awkward spot because there is not really any good therapy for folks with a moderate weight problem.  My best reassurance for you is that there is a LOT of research being done and it seems likely that some successful medications will become available soon.

Best of luck,
Dr JP
