exercise and weight

Question
QUESTION: How does exercise figure into weight loss? I keep hearing that it does but at the end of the day isn't calories in vs calories out? So why do you need exercise to loose weight. I hate like anything to exercise that's why I ask. In the summer I don't mind walking but I hate formal exercise.

thanks,
joyce

ANSWER: Hi Joyce

Exercise is important to weight lose because it effects the way you body functions in regards to burning calories. Let me list the ways or the cause and effect.

1. Exercise increases muscle; muscle burns fat quicker and more effectively.

2. Exercise improves heart and lung function which in turn allows you to work out long enough to burn of excess sugar which if not used turns to fat.
3.Sweating during your work out eliminate impurities from the body that effect the way your body processes food. These impurities attack the body causing it to react by creating hormones to protect itself that cause belly fat.
4.Exercise stimulates HDL Cholesterol levels. These protect you against the bad type of Cholesterol  which cause fat deposits to develop in your arteries which causes you to feel fatigued and sluggish. Eventually leading to other health issues that cause weight gain.

As you see by not exercising you set off a chain of events that overlap each other. This overlapping is what indirectly causes weight gain and directly cause weight gain by affecting different parts of your body to the point where they stop functioning properly causing other parts of your body to shut down. When this happens you will gain weight. Your body cannot maintain a healthy body weight in most cases unless it is functioning properly.

QUESTION: Well, thanks. I was so hoping you would tell me I could just be lazy. I hate exercise. But you're the expert.

So what is the bare MINIMUM I can get by with?
And does lifting barbells count as lifting weights?

joyce

ANSWER: Hi Joyce

The bare minimum is 30 minutes of cardio a day and light weight, high rep weight training 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes. This all depends on if you are cleared for exercise by a doctor. I would say barbells no and yes to dumbells because you get a more even workout. You can also use the cable machines for weight training.

QUESTION: What is areobic exercise? I keep haring about heart rate, why do you need to worry about it?

Answer
Heart rate is important because though you want to raise it to between 50 and 80 % during exercise you want to take care as to not exceed max heart rate. Heart rate is determined by age. You take 220 and subtract it by your age to find out what your max heart rate is. Exceeding max heart rate can be dangerous. Signs of exceeding max heart rate is nausea and vomiting also dizziness and becoming light headed.

Aerobics are a great way to burn calories and increase heart rate. When starting Aerobics join a less advanced class that can build your cardio capacity. As your heart and lungs get stronger you can start getting into more advanced classes if that is what you want. You will also notice your energy increase which will make you want to exercise even more.
Remember get cleared by a doctor prior to beginning any exercise program.
