olive oil and deep frying

Question
Hello,
I enjoy deep-fried chicken. I use virgin olive oil exlusively for deep-frying. Calories aside, is it ok for my health? Is olive oil appropriate for deep frying?

Thank you

Answer
Apostolos, not many people use olive oil for deep-frying b/c it doesn't have a very high smoke point (peanut oil is used often and is a monounsaturated fat).    I won't ever say that fried foods are ok for someone's health when the healthier option (baked, broiled, etc.) is so much better.  The calories alone are usually doubled when a food is fried.

Take care,
