Question
How can I convince my family to eat healthier? I while away at college discovered the benefits of eating well and want to share my knowledge with my parents. My mother has high blood pressure and when I tell her not to drink so much soda or to watch her salt intake, she blows me off. It hurts that she won't listen to me. Should I just give up and see what happens? I used to be borderline obese and lost 45 lbs slowly thru small diet changes. I'd hope that they could see this as an example.

Answer
Hello Brenda!

Congratulations on your healthy habits and recent weight loss.  Eating healthy can sometimes be very challenging to family members if they have developed poor eating habits. As you said, it takes small diet changes.  While you cannot expect your family to revamp their entire diet, you can start slowly helping them eat healthier by suggesting healthier food choices. Try preparing some tastey dishes that are healthy and see what they think.  How about a fruit smoothie?  There are some great recipes on www.foodfit.com  that are healthy and delicious too!

Blueberry Fruit Smoothie

1 cup low-fat vanilla ice cream
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (do not thaw)
1/2 cup light peaches, packed in water or natural juices, chopped
 1/2 cup unsweetened pineapple juice
 1/4 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
Place all ingredients in a blender.  Cover and mix until smooth, about 30 to 45 seconds.
