QuestionMy son is completing a project on fast food and he is particularly interested in the amount of fat in fast food. He has carried out some interesting research in his school on consumption of fast food and is now looking for some information on the actual amount of fat that children should not be exceeding. Is there a 'RDA' for fat for children or should we assume that it would be about half that of an adult?
Answer I don't know the specific RDA, but a healthy fat intake for a kid or teen is about 60-80 grams per day. Out of that 60-80 grams only 20% should be the saturated type, the rest polyunsaturated or other healthy types like monounsaturated fats. The worst fat you can eat is the type found in fast food and products on the shelf containing the hydrogenated or trans fat. I think it's about the same for an adult. Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
