Bioaccumulation of mercury and fish

Question
hi,
I have read some of your responses about fish and mercury, but i have a couple more questions regarding this,  i know some fish have more mercury than others, but what does the body do with mercury anyway, even if it is from fish with less mercury?  is it digested?  does it not cross the blood brain barrier?
also i know that fish is beneficial but can you not reep the rewards of fish by just taking a dha supplement?

Answer
Hi Jade,

Mercury does its harmful work through what's called bioaccumulation in the body, reaching high concentrations among populations of some fish species. Larger species are usually more harmful than smaller ones because they live long and accumulate the mercury. Bioaccumulation means that an organism absorbs asubstance faster than can eliminate it and in case of mercury it means MUCH faster. So you see, eating the smaller fish can help only to slow down the accumulation, not avoid it.

It does penetrate the blood-brain barrier and the most harmful effects are neurological, damaging the vision, hearing, speech, and a lack of coordination.
