Question
hi i have tried many ways to lose weight..i have decided to go all out..i am taking a drug called winstrol (dont know if youve heard it) it is supposedly a cutting steroid..anyways my question is i am thinking of doing a diet where basically i will have a protein shake every 3 hrs...which will be about 6 protein shakes a day...my protein will be at about 288 grams a day my fat intake will be 6 grams a plus efa supplementing so arond 10 grams...i will have about 18 g of carbs and my total caloric intake just with the protein shakes will be around 1400 hundred calories...i will weight train and run 30 min in the morning( i will also include through out the day some pieces of chicken or meat..so i expect the protein and fat count to be a little higher..what i want to know is it safe doing this diet?? how long will it take to lose my stubborn belly fat?..i know you will probably tell me to just switch my deit and stay away from simple sugars and go with complex..but i dont eat that badly..and i really like to stay away from running because it can be very catabolic...basically i am just wondering will this deit work??will it make me more cut up looking?( i think it will b/c carbs hold tons of water so i should get a drier appearance) and should i be running with such low amounts of glycogen..i also supplement with tons of Branch chain amino acids whihc i believe hold muscle glycogen..anyways your input would be great thanks !

Answer
Michael,
Unfortunately carbs don't hold a ton of water-about 2 pounds for a woman, about 4 for a man. It's not going to make a big difference in your appearance.
If you follow your diet as you described, then whether or not you lose weight depends on how much additional chicken or meat you eat throughout the day. I'd strongly suggest measuring any additional food, to keep your calories between 1,600 and 1,800.
However, there are a few problems with your diet.
1. Not enough fat. It's easy to assume that eating fat means that you'll store body fat. However, that's not true when you are on a low-sugar diet. The fat you eat can only be stored as body fat when your blood insulin levels are high. Having too little fat in your diet can also cause nasty skin and hair problems, and it has other consequences on a low-carb diet. So, make sure that between 25 and 35 percent of your calories are from fat-the very minimum for you should be 25 percent of 1600, or 44 grams of fat daily.
2. FIBER. Your diet contains almost no fiber. You will run into digestive problems very quickly (SEVERE constipation). Fiber deficiency also causes high cholesterol and colon cancer. You need to include at least 30 grams daily of fiber. Supplements are fine. Ground flaxseeds would be a great way for you to add healthy essential fatty acids plus fiber. Vegetables are another good source-think celery, broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, cauliflower. Also beans, nuts.
3. Essential amino acid deficiency is also possible if most of your protein is coming from one particular brand of protein shake. Most protein shakes use fairly low-quality protein such as whey or casein. Drink different brands of shakes, and try to include at least one soy shake every day.
4. 8 to 10 glasses of water every day-absolutely critical on a high protein diet.
5. If you want to lose fat, think cardio. 30 minutes a day isn't enough to see significant fat loss. An hour would be much better. Don't work out so that you're panting for breath-keep the pace moderate. It's fine to do two 30 minute sessions instead of one long session.

And finally, I just want to make sure you understand the protein, fat, and sugar relationships in the body.
Your body can't make protein from sugar or fat, but it can make both fat and sugar from protein (which one is made depends on the specific amino acid). When that happens, waste nitrogen is created, and excessive waste nitrogen is very hard on your kidneys.
Sugar can be made from either protein or fat. Sugar can be converted to fat.
Fat can be made from protein or sugar (except for a few essential fatty acids). Fat can't be converted to either sugar or protein. Fat is used as-is, or converted to ketones if your carb intake is low for several days in a row.
Why is this important? Normally, your brain runs on sugar. When you stop eating carbs, your liver begins to break down protein to make sugar. If you aren't eating enough fat, your liver will continue to break down dietary protein until you eat carbs again, making a tremendous amount of waste nitrogen. IF you are eating a good amount of dietary fat, however, after a few days your liver will begin to make ketones from fat. Once blood ketone levels rise, your brain will begin to use ketones for energy instead of sugar-that frees your liver from having to make so much sugar and stops the breakdown of protein for energy. Instead, you're burning fat-and your body doesn't differentiate between fat you eat and fat from your love handles.

Finally how long will it take to lose your belly fat? Depending on how much extra fat you have, it may only take a few months, or it make take years. But the one thing that I can absolutely guarantee is that it will take THE REST OF YOUR LIFE to keep it off. If you do this diet, get the body you want, and then go back to eating exactly the way you did before, then your stomach will look exactly like it did before. Don't start this diet unless you're willing to stick with it for at least the next 30 years.
