Tanya,

I did read some of your FAQ's but I guess I wanted a more direct or specific answer?br> To begin with, I volunteer here like you do. I'm under self-defense (aka Martial33).
It frustrates me because all my life I've kept in pretty good shape doing martial arts for 18 years now and bodybuilding. I know about weight training programs and thought I knew a bit about nutrition.
When I met my wife, I was (slightly) concerned about her becoming anorexic because of her eating patterns.
She was (then) 5'8" tall and about 115 to 120. When we met, she was just turning 20. Now she is 39. She is the same height as when I met her but her weight is now 185.
She blames it on having two kids but many others have had two, three or four kids and yet they seem to be able to keep it together.
About two years ago, I bougt her a gym membership and even got her a personal trainer for 20 sessions. She did about a year in the first gym but then dropped it siting this or that.
We even try to keep our protein up, veggies up and starches down. She admitelly will endulge herself for things like birthday parties, and holidays scarfing down a good sized peicve of cake. Its not often, but Id say its enough.
Ive bought her fat burners, which she tried a bit but two bottles are still sealed after years.
Then I bought her a stepper. She does about 3-4 days a week on it 20-25 min each session and pushes herself to do 2200-2400steps. As well, she goes to the gym say 3 days a week (personal trainer is over now though)
Recently I got her set up at a new gym. This time, I don't think she needs a personal trainer anymore cause she knows what to do an how to do it. She has no problem with strength and she knows about routines and how to use the equipment.
In spite of this, the gym redid her numbers. She is still 185, 35% body fat and could loose 65lbs. The gym said she can loose that in 20 weeks but of course wants her to sign up with a trainer and buy expensive fat-off foods from them (over and above the membership)
She even bought a tray that is supposed to show portion sizes. She never uses it but read the book that came with it.
I have a high metabolic rate. At 6'3?and 205lbs, I can eat 3500 callories a day and not gain weight. Maybe she sees what I eat and eats the same but cant burn it off. (I'm at about 19%BF)
So I wanted to hear it from you, because you are knowledgeable at weight loss and also from a women's point of view.
Her last trainer had her on a set of 15, then sets of 10. I told her her resp should be higher and weight lower and she should superset the exercises.
For breakfast she eats a tear open pkg of maple walnut oats, with coffee then she eats a sandwich for lunch (tuna, turkey or chicken) with coffee, then for dinner weve been pretty good, white fish with brown wild rice, and veggies is typical. At night she will drink 1-3 alcoholic drinks (usually every night) either Rye and diet pop or wine.
Her job is on her feet a lot floral designer ?she says she never gets time to sit down but I don't think standing is burning too many calories for her.
What should she be eating and can you recommend a good program for her?
Best, M/

Dear Phil,

I hear you! The story is too familiar to me personally and for many of my clients. I think that on realistic side, your wife is doing well except for her body fat %.

I would like to know her waist-to-hip ratio to figure whether the problem is about insulin. Also, in spite of her moving around a lot, I would like to know her fitness level in the form of max oxygen consumption approximation.

I can imagine that the solution can be in choosing the right fat to (carb+protein) ratio. We have it pre-recalculated for 9 diet plans, "free" food lists, and 180 recipes. The main goal of this ratio is decreasing appetite and cravings AND increasing resting metabolic rate without any fat burners.

It would be OK with me to enroll your wife free of charge in exchange to her weekly reports (we'll be sending just a couple of questions.)

Hi Tanya,

There's one other thing I forgot to mention... She hates when I say anything about it. Therefore if I were to put her in touch with your collegue, she'd be like, "why dont you worry about your self" or something to that effect. This is why I wanted a sort of specific tailored answer so I can pass it on as a suggestion - drop hints etc.

Answer
Tailored answer in this case, I think, could be the one mentioning specifics of macronutrient ratio, that is missing even in the Atkins diet, thus the high percentage of hitting the plateau on Atkins.

You see, there are two completely different metabolic pathways in our bodies. One uses carbohydrates for fuel, another burn the fat. Both pathways burn food carbs and stored body's carbs OR food fats and body's stores fats.
The key point is, carb depots are very small, good for just 1.5 days to run on. On the other hand, fat stores are potentially huge, there clinical studies describing morbidly people able to live on water and vitamin solutions for almost a year.

This difference results in different effects of high carb diets and high fat diets. When your body runs on carbs, it forces you to get those carbs over and over again, in fear to run out of this fuel. Subjectively, it feels as hunger and specifically craving for sweet foods.
On high fat diets, the body runs on fat metabolites, ketones, and there's no fear of running out of them. Plus, the resting metabolic level gets higher so even forced to consume every day 300 more calories, dieters lost more weight comparing with high-carb dieters, as showed a clinical study.

But when they are not forced to eat those 300 more calories, high-fat dieters wanted to eat less, so they lost even more weight. One Japanese study showed that the skin temperature and body heat loss by radiation from the skin is higher when on high fat diet, so that's one more explanation.

Now, the major obstacle for going on this type of diet is their complicated planning. So so far, it's been in use in clinics and in highly motivated community of bodybuilders.
Banta diet precalculates everything for you. You even have a list of "free" foods - eat them all you want but never let yourself get hungry!

Being experience in strength training is a great benefit for a Banta dieter, since a very important phase is "carb burning" through doing weights.

Hope this can help?
