Question
something happened to this message when I went back to fix something it typed over it, so below after light, it should br light yogurt. thanks

Hello,

This is a long story so please bare with me. I am 21 years old and have been over weight all of my life. I am 5'2 and weigh 168 lbs. It is January of 06. In March of 04 I weighed 173 lbs. I decided that I was going to lose weight and do it on my own. I got a gym membership and ate very well. I went to the gym on average of 6 days a week and my average foods for the day were a light , 2 apples, turkey sandwhich on light wheat bread, or a tuna sandwhich for lunch and dinner with some kind of steamed vegaables.I lost about 2 lbs a week. I got down to between 155-160 and decided I just wanted to maintain so I went to the gym less, about twice a week. I was very happy with my results. In January of 05 I decided to quit smoking, not even thinking about the possibility of gaining weight. By the time March hit I weighed 188 lbs. I do not recall eating larger portions or junk food, but maybe I did. It just piled on like I was pregnant, I got stretch marks and back problems. Immediatly I began the same type of diet that I had done the previous year. Nothing happened. I lost maybe 3 lbs in 2 months. I went to my Dr. because I thought something might be wrong. He did a blood test to check my thyroid and he said it was fine. He suggested I continue doing what I was doing and excercising more, and/or joining some kind of weight loss club. So I did, in June I joined Jenny Craig, I loved it, in 3 weeks I lost 10 lbs on thier scale, my scale at home barely changed. Then after the first three weeks the weight loss stopped again. I did Jenny Craig for close to another month and a half and then had to quit because it was so expensive with no results. After that I tried doing different things, I tried mixing in different foods, trying different activities, I took up jogging. Oh, and I started smoking again. Nothing was working so the only thing I could think of was the smoking, so I started again, and yes I am not happy about that, I want to quit again but I cannot risk weighing 188 lbs again. So about 2 months ago my Dr. perscribed me Phentermine because he knew doing it on my own was not working. In one month on Phentermine I lost 5 lbs, now for a total of 20 lbs in 10 or 11 months. That is a long time, in 2004 it took my about 2 months to lost 15 lbs. I am still taking the phentermine and in a month and half after the original 5 lbs were lost I have not lost anything. I now do 40 minutes of cardio 5 or 6 times a week, I eat 3 fruits and 2 vegitables a day, my carbs stay low and my protein is high. I know there has to be something wrong. I don't understand how 2 years ago I could lose2 lbs a week to 20 lbs in 11 months. WHat happened to me? My thyroid is fine, the Dr. actually said my bllod work was perfect. I don't even want to be rail thin. I want to get down to about 150 to leave me some grace to gain some weight once I quit smoking again. Do you have any idea of what could be going on? I am on Depo Provera for birth control. I have been on it for over 3 years now. I am taking Wellbutrin to quit the smoking. Besides that I don't take anything else. I am very good with taking vitamins and calcium supplements. I don't think my family Dr. believes I am doing all that I say. I go back to him in February to see my weight loss but it will only be the 5 lbs he saw at my first visit taking the Phentermine. I don't think he is going to really try to figure out what is really wrong. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.
Melanie

Answer
Dear Melanie,

I think that the reason can be very simple: high protein in your diet. In the end, it can cancel all the benefits of your low carb efforts since almost half of it is being converted into carbohydrates in the process of "gluconeogenesis" - new glucose formation from protein.

My impression based on years of work with low carb (Atkins including) stallers led me to my research into truly ketogenic diets, which limit protein for the exactly this reason.

When the Banta diet was being developed, we took this fact into account and got excellent results. Since Banta 2005 is now offered for free from http://bantadiet.com , I feel comfortable to strongly recommend you to go there and take a look. I am sure you will benefit from this plan if you follow it as instructed.

Good luck,
