Atkins recommends drinking lot of fluids – at least 64 ounces of water a day. He also suggests drinking green tea about half an hour before meal time to help your weight loss efforts as green tea helps suppress your appetite, make you less likely to overeat and has potent fat burning properties.

Green tea is thought to be a super-food. Numerous studies have linked green tea to decreased rates of breast cancer, lung cancer, esophagus cancer and arthritis. Recent research suggests that green tea can lower cholesterol (LDL, the “bad one”) increase HDL cholesterol ( the “good one”) and lower triglyceride levels. What’s even better is that green tea may help dieters lose weight.

In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

If you want to try adding green tea, keep in mind it also contains caffeine, although less than coffee. Also, the polyphenols in green tea are biologically active, and may interfere with certain medications you take. A pharmacist or physician can advise on this issue. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not drink or take green tea in any form. Because of its caffeine component, individuals with anxiety disorders, heart problems, kidney disorders, stomach ulcers should also avoid green tea.
