Partnering for Weight Loss

Imagine embarking on your weight loss journey with someone you love dearly and trust. Perhaps your spouse or one of your kids that also needs to desperately lose weight to get into shape and healthy. Think of how great it would be to have that type of support. Studies show that people who have large amounts of weight to lose are more successful when they try to lose weight as a group, or at least with a partner. There's just something about having another person or group of people to answer to that kicks in something in our brains and makes us work harder. Its one thing to slip up or even fail on your own, but to have to answer to someone else brings in a completely different element. This partnered or team weight-loss approach has taken the country by storm. At the beginning of each year when people are making New Year's Resolutions, there are all kinds of groups getting together to lose weight and get into shape.

There are even television shows that showcase team weight loss like the reality show The Biggest Loser. Biggest Loser's latest season has taken the partner weight loss approach previously mentioned. Parent and child teams are pitted against teams featuring husbands and wives. Instead of being all alone on their weight loss journey, contestants on Biggest Loser have a family member that they can lean on for support while trying to lose weight. During the first few episodes of this season of Biggest Loser, when teams failed to put up large enough numbers they risked being sent home. Now the show has moved to one team being up for elimination, and that team having to choose which of its two members go home. So just like that, contestants can be all alone trying to finish their weight loss journey.

Biggest Loser gives people the opportunity to make huge changes in their lives in a short amount of time to see huge results. Each team is given a personal trainer that works out with them for hours each day and works with them on their nutrition and calorie intake. Having access to a personal trainer each day and learning how to prepare their own meals is essential to the contestants having success after they leave Biggest Loser ranch. The contestants also have challenges where they can win prizes throughout the week. The scariest part to those watching might be the idea that the contestants have to get on a huge scale and show all of America their weight each week. And each week contestants are worried about their team being able to put up the correct numbers, because they have to weigh with their family member.

If you have a partner that you're working with to lose weight, your weigh-ins might not be quite as intense as those on Biggest Loser, but they are still important. Keeping track of your weight is essential to measuring your progress when trying to lose weight.
