post op nutrition for pts with celiac disease


Question
I have a patient with Celiac disease who is getting ready for surgery.  She says that all of the liquid protein sources that she has tried are making her stomach hurt.  I need suggestions to give her for protein sources, especially clear and full liquid sources.  Thank you

Hi Kathy - products made with pure whey protein should not cause a reaction in celiac patients. She may be having a problem for another reason. If she really can't use any protein source, she should talk with her doctor or dietitian from her bariatric surgery program and try to find out what might be going on. If she has not tried just using a simple whey protein isolate (either flavored or unflavored) mixed only with water, I'd try that. She should start with a small amount - like 4 ounces - and see if she reacts.
