50 lbs

Question
QUESTION: hi! I was wondering how long it would take me to lose 50 lbs.also if i wanted to lose 50lbs in about 5 and a half months how many calories do i need to eat, and how many do i need to burn? thank you for your time!

ANSWER: Angela, To lose 50 pounds in 165 days will be tough to do, but you can do it if you exercise a lot. You would have to produce a calorie deficit of about 1060 per day. So if you eat about 1500 calories per day and exercise for a few hours per day, you should be able to lose 2-3 pounds per week. If you only exercise 1/2 hour to 1 hour per day, you would on average lose 1-2 pounds per week. The best exercise is one that works the large muscle groups like the legs and back. Rowing, treadmill, elliptical, and weight lifting are all great exercises. Walking will work too, but you probably won't burn enough calories to get the results you want.
Don't try to eat less calories or you will risk losing your muscle mass which in turn will lower your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight.

QUESTION: thanks so much, but i have another question. if i eat 1500 calories and do 50 minutes of cycle everyday besides saterdays and sundays, and exersize everyday, except for mondays and sundays(i have ice skating for an hour) how many pounds will i lose? also when i do reach my goal weight (110-120 lbs) how can i maintain my weight?
thank you very much

Answer
Dear Angela, Everybody has a different metabolism, so you have to give it a week or two and see what you lose. If you don't lose enough, add more cycling or walking till you reach the amount you want. You are in charge of your weightloss by choosing your exercise amounts and watching your food intake. Keep a journal of your exercise and food and adjust it accordingly.
Once you lose the weight, whatever you do, don't go back to eating what you ate when you were overweight. That, I feel, is harder to do then going through the weightloss, so beware. You have to change habits for a lifetime. Daily exercise is a must and if you put on even 2-3 pounds, watch what you eat and get that weight back off. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
